There are four main parts to our program:

There are four main parts to our program:

1. Apply

  1. Check the eligibility requirements to become a HCA here https://www.alberta.ca/health-care-aide-program

  2. Check the job postings at our participating organizations.

  3. Apply for the apprenticeship program through one of our participating organizations.

  4. Participate in an interview.

Of the learners that completed the orientation between October 2025 and March 2026, 97% said they are “more than ready” or “ready” to begin working as a Care Aide Learner.

2. Get a sense of the work

  • Begin a three-week orientation on-site at a continuing care centre operated by one of our participating organizations. The orientation is led by skilled tutors and includes time in the classroom and on the unit. You will observe experienced HCAs and participate in some aspects of the work. This will give you a very good idea of the day-to-day relationships and tasks of HCAs.

  • Apply to the HCA education program after you have been hired by the participating organization. This is a provincial program with a set curriculum. Your on-site tutors will help you with this.

3. Learn and earn

  • You will be studying and working at the same time for 10 to 12 months.

  • Work as a Care Aide Learner with the organization where you completed your orientation. You will work about 3-4 days a week. You will be paid for your work.

    • Take on-line classes with instructors from NorQuest College.

  • There are nine courses. You will need to pass the exam at the end of each course.

  • You will not need to travel to take the classes. All lessons are on-line and happen at the same times each week. You will have to log in and participate in each class together with your peers.

  • Participate in labs with the tutor at the site where you are working. In the labs you will practice what you are learning in your classes. The tutors will make sure you can safely and comfortably practice the different skills.

  • The program takes 11 months to complete

I saw that there is more than what the eye sees, like how meaningful the job is, especially with the people we are working with.”
