Learners in the program:
· Participate in a three-week on-site orientation to understand what it means to be an HCA and to confirm their commitment to enrolling in the program. In surveys completed between October 2025 and March 2026, 97% of respondents felt “more than ready” or “ready” to begin working as a Care Aide Learner following the three-week orientation. Learners also indicated they felt “very ready” (85.7%) or “fairly ready” (14.3%) to provide person-centred care.
· Are employed by the host organization as a Care Aide Learner from the first day of orientation through to completion of the 11- to 12-month program and provincial certification.
· Perform more skills on the unit over the course of the program, as they learn more and become more comfortable (see Skills Map).
· Access a network of support including on-site tutors and experienced HCA mentors, post-secondary instructors, and each other.
· Commit to a return-to-service agreement with the host organization to work, at salary, for a minimum of 1500 hours following certification.
· Have their tuition fees paid by the program.

Students have a unified, shared experience and are more engaged because they see each other twice a week. There is more contact and more accountability. ~ HCAAP instructor
The HCA Apprenticeship Program is a collaboration between CHAA, employers, and a post secondary licensed to deliver the HCA currciculum. We are responsive and find solutions to make it feasible for employers to offer the program.
We are in constant contact with host operators and provide ongoing support including:
· Developing standardized position descriptions, promotional materials, interview questions, and checklists for candidate selection and onboarding.
· Creating full modules for each day of the three-week orientation.
· Procuring lab equipment.
· Coordinating a training program for tutors and mentors.
· Establishing a user-friendly program and instructional portal with all the relevant information and documentation that tutors and instructors need.
· Facilitating trainings, check ins, and knowledge sharing amongst employers and between tutors and instructors.

Currently open only to CHAA members, the intent is to scale and spread the program to more and diverse employers, communities, and specialized markets.

The bridge that CHAA provides has been so positive. Communication between tutors and the post-secondary instructors is much better. It is easy to reach out and resolve issues quickly. The new portal CHAA developed where all the information resides is easy to access. It is like night and day compared to other programs.
